I grew up in Queens, N.Y., and moved to Atlanta, Ga., in 2003. In 2008 I graduated from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., and later enrolled in the journalism department of the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College.
In September 2008, I became a contributing writer for Ithaca College’s nationally acclaimed weekly newspaper, The Ithacan. Over three years, I worked as a reporter, Assistant Arts and Entertainment Editor, Assistant News Editor, News Editor and the paper’s Editor in Chief.
During my time as editor, the paper took more of a focus on Web-first content and incorporated more interactive features with reporting, providing a broader scope of coverage on the campus and surrounding community. In the same year, the paper was awarded Best Non-Daily College Newspaper in the Country by the Society of Professional Journalists, among several other regional, state and national honors.
In 2011, I founded The Park Association for Journalists of Color, a student organization in The Park School of Communications at Ithaca College dedicated to the enrichment and training of young journalists, specifically those of underrepresented races, genders and sexualities in newsrooms.
Throughout college, I reported and wrote for The Sunday Paper in Atlanta, CBS News, The New York Times Student Journalism Institute, The Associated Press, The Chips Quinn Scholars Program, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The New York Times.
My work has been syndicated internationally through AP news wire and as a reporting fellow at The Times, I wrote a front-page story examining the homeless shelter boom in New York City.
My reporting, editing and newsroom leadership has been recognized on a regional and national level by SPJ, The National Association of Black Journalists and The College Media Association. I graduated with honors from Ithaca College in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and a minor in theater studies.
Currently, I work at Digital First Media, which manages the Journal Register Company and MediaNews Group. At DFM, I produce, report, write and curate national news content on a variety of online platforms for distribution to the company’s chain of 75+ newspapers across the country.
I’m also a classically trained vocalist and a theater enthusiast with six years of study in theater history and music theory, but those skills are now directed toward shower singing and the occasional karaoke stint. I still work some Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Stephen Sondheim into my Spotify playlists.
